🏛️ Tbilisi & Mtskheta
The capital of Georgia (Sakartvelo), where nearly every trip lands, and Mtskheta, the ancient capital half an hour north. Sulphur baths, the old town's balconies, wine bars and the country's oldest cathedrals; Uplistsikhe, Gori and Davit Gareja are day trips.
🍷 Kakheti Wine Country
The Alazani valley east of Tbilisi, where most of Georgia's wine is made, much of it in buried clay qvevri: the walled hill town of Sighnaghi, Telavi, Tsinandali, Alaverdi and Gremi. The September–October harvest (rtveli) is the time to come.
🏰 Tusheti
A remote highland of stone towers north of Kakheti, reached by one 4x4 track over the Abano Pass that is open only from about June to early October.
🏔️ Kazbegi & the Military Road
North from Tbilisi up the Georgian Military Road: Ananuri fortress, the Gudauri ski resort and, over the Jvari Pass, Stepantsminda with Gergeti Trinity Church under Mount Kazbek. Snowstorms close the pass for days at a time in winter.
💧 Borjomi & Samtskhe
South-west of Tbilisi: the spa town of Borjomi in its forested gorge, the ski resort of Bakuriani above it, and Akhaltsikhe, the base for the cave monastery of Vardzia.
⛪ Kutaisi & Imereti
Western Georgia's heartland: Kutaisi with Gelati Monastery and its own low-cost airport, and the caves and canyons around it (Prometheus, Martvili, Sataplia). Half way between Tbilisi and the sea, and the way to Svaneti.
🗼 Svaneti
The high Caucasus of the north-west: medieval Svan towers in Mestia and Ushguli under 5,000 m peaks, glaciers and some of Georgia's best hiking. Reached from Zugdidi up the Enguri gorge, or by small plane when the weather allows.
🏖️ Batumi & the Black Sea
Georgia's subtropical Black Sea coast: Batumi's boulevard, beaches, botanical garden and high-rise hotels, five hours from Tbilisi by double-decker train, with its own airport.
