The steaming cone of Bromo in the Tengger caldera, watched at sunrise from Penanjakan with Semeru erupting behind, then a jeep across the Sea of Sand and the steps to the crater rim. Most stay a night at Cemoro Lawang on the rim and start at 3 a.m. It is cold (near freezing at dawn in July-August), so bring warm layers. Bromo has been at alert level II (Waspada) through 2026: the crater rim is open, but keep out of the 1 km zone round the vent.

Bromo Volcanic Alert Level II

Bromo has been at alert level II (Waspada) through 2026: the sunrise viewpoints, the Sea of Sand and the crater rim are open, but entry within 1 km of the active vent is banned. The level can rise and close the crater at short notice; check the MAGMA Indonesia app (magma.esdm.go.id) the day before.

Lebaran Travel Rush

Idul Fitri falls on 10-11 March 2027, with national holidays from 9 to 15 March. Java's trains and flights sell out weeks ahead, fares hit the legal cap, toll roads and the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry jam, and Jakarta empties. Book every Java leg early or avoid that week.

  • Idul Fitri (Lebaran) homecoming — The end of Ramadan, when tens of millions travel home (mudik). Trains, flights and the Java–Bali and Bali–Lombok ferries sell out a month ahead and fares hit the legal cap; Jakarta empties and some restaurants close. In 2027 it falls two days after Nyepi, so the second week of March is the hardest of the year to travel in Indonesia. During Ramadan before it, Lombok and Java restaurants may be screened off by day.
