Checked 2026-10; confirm with the embassy before you fly.

🦧 North Sumatra

Far west of Bali on Indonesia's biggest western island: Medan, where flights from Jakarta, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore land; the Batak villages of Samosir in vast Lake Toba; and the orangutans of the Leuser rainforest at Bukit Lawang. Roads are slow (four to five hours from Medan to the lake), and the rains are heaviest from about September to December.

🛕 Java

Indonesia's most populous island: Borobudur and Prambanan from Yogyakarta, the Bromo sunrise and the blue fire of Ijen in the east (an hour's ferry from Bali), and the capital Jakarta, the other airport with a flight from India. Good trains link them.

🛖 Tana Toraja (Sulawesi)

The Toraja highlands of South Sulawesi: boat-roofed ancestral houses, cliff graves with wooden effigies, and great funeral feasts, held most from July to September. Reached by a flight to Makassar and 8-10 hours by road, usually on an overnight bus.

🪸 Raja Ampat (West Papua)

Some 1,500 islands off the western tip of New Guinea with the richest coral reefs on earth: manta rays, the karst lagoons of Piaynemo and Wayag, birds of paradise, and homestays on stilts over the reef. Far from everywhere: a flight to Sorong from Jakarta or Bali, then a two-hour ferry to Waisai. Calmest October to April.

🦎 Komodo & Flores

Labuan Bajo on Flores, an hour's flight east of Bali, and the Komodo National Park beyond it: dragons on Rinca and Komodo, the Padar viewpoint, Pink Beach and manta rays. Visits have been capped at about 1,000 a day since April 2026.

🐢 Lombok & the Gili Islands

East of Bali across the Lombok Strait: the three car-free Gili islands (lively Trawangan, middling Air, quiet Meno), the surf bays round Kuta Lombok, and Mount Rinjani, whose crater-rim treks close from January to March. Reached by fast boat from Bali or a 40-minute flight.

🦖 Nusa Islands

Three islands half an hour by fast boat from Sanur: wild Nusa Penida with the Kelingking cliff and manta rays, and gentle Nusa Lembongan with Ceningan over the yellow bridge. Calmest seas from April to October.

🌾 Ubud, Central & North Bali

Inland and round the coast: Ubud's rice terraces, temples and yoga, the Sidemen valley under Mount Agung, the Mount Batur sunrise trek at Kintamani, the lake temple and waterfalls round Munduk, the black-sand bays and wreck dives of Amed, and in the quiet north, Lovina's dolphin boats and the Menjangan reefs off Pemuteran.

🏄 South Bali

The beaches round the airport: Kuta and Seminyak for surf, sunsets and beach clubs, Canggu's cafes, Jimbaran's seafood dinners on the sand, Uluwatu's cliff temple and coves, the family resorts of Nusa Dua, and Sanur, where the boats leave for the Nusa islands. Bali's international flights land here.
