Batak Villages on an Island inside a Supervolcano
The largest volcanic lake on earth, about 100 km long, filling the caldera of the eruption that blew Toba apart some 74,000 years ago; Samosir, an island about the size of Singapore, rises in the middle. Most travellers stay at Tuktuk, a little peninsula of guesthouses on Samosir's east shore, 45 minutes by ferry from Parapat. Samosir is the heartland of the Toba Batak, mostly Christian: the carved stone sarcophagi of the Sidabutar kings and sigale-gale puppet dances at Tomok, the stone chairs of Huta Siallagan at Ambarita, boat-roofed houses and Batak dances at Simanindo, and hot springs at Pangururan. Swim, kayak and ride a scooter round the island. Batak cooking leans on pork and lake fish; guesthouses cook vegetarian dishes too. Silangit airport, with flights from Jakarta, is about two hours by road from the Parapat ferry; Medan is four to five.

Worth knowing
Lebaran Travel Rush
Idul Fitri falls on 10-11 March 2027, with national holidays from 9 to 15 March. Domestic flights sell out weeks ahead and fares hit the legal cap, the roads out of Medan and Makassar jam, and Lake Toba's ferries and Bukit Lawang's guesthouses fill with holidaymakers. Book flights and rooms early or avoid that week.
Heads up
North Sumatra Rainy Season
From about September to December, heavy afternoon rain is common round Medan and Lake Toba, roads can be cut by landslides on the way to the lake, and the views across it are often in cloud. Mornings are usually clearer; keep a spare day for the journey back to the airport.
Heads up
Christmas and New Year at the Lake
The Toba Batak are mostly Christian, and at Christmas and New Year families come home from all over Indonesia: Parapat's ferries queue, Silangit flights and guesthouses fill, and prices rise. Book early, or come in the weeks either side.
- Idul Fitri (Lebaran) homecoming — The end of Ramadan, when tens of millions travel home (mudik). Trains, flights and the Java–Bali and Bali–Lombok ferries sell out a month ahead and fares hit the legal cap; Jakarta empties and some restaurants close. In 2027 it falls two days after Nyepi, so the second week of March is the hardest of the year to travel in Indonesia. During Ramadan before it, Lombok and Java restaurants may be screened off by day.
