Boat-Roofed Houses, Cliff Graves and Funeral Feasts
The highland homeland of the Toraja people in South Sulawesi, known for tongkonan ancestral houses with soaring boat-shaped roofs and for funerals like nowhere else: the dead may be kept at home for months or years until the family can hold a funeral feast (rambu solo') with buffalo sacrifices, and are then laid in cliff tombs and caves watched over by tau-tau wooden effigies, as at Lemo and Londa. Rantepao is the base: Kete Kesu village, the rice terraces of Batutumonga, the megaliths of Bori Kalimbuang and the baby graves in a tree at Kambira are a short drive. Funerals are held most from July to September; visitors may attend with a local guide, bringing a gift such as sugar or cigarettes, and should be ready to see animals sacrificed. Getting there is long: a flight to Makassar, then 8-10 hours by road, usually on an overnight bus; Toraja's own airport has few flights.

Worth knowing
Lebaran Travel Rush
Idul Fitri falls on 10-11 March 2027, with national holidays from 9 to 15 March. Domestic flights sell out weeks ahead and fares hit the legal cap, the roads out of Medan and Makassar jam, and Lake Toba's ferries and Bukit Lawang's guesthouses fill with holidaymakers. Book flights and rooms early or avoid that week.
Heads up
Toraja Rainy Season
From about November to April the Toraja highlands get heavy rain most afternoons: village tracks turn to mud, and landslides can block the 8-10-hour road from Makassar for hours. Fewer funerals are held. Keep a spare day before your flight from Makassar.
- Idul Fitri (Lebaran) homecoming — The end of Ramadan, when tens of millions travel home (mudik). Trains, flights and the Java–Bali and Bali–Lombok ferries sell out a month ahead and fares hit the legal cap; Jakarta empties and some restaurants close. In 2027 it falls two days after Nyepi, so the second week of March is the hardest of the year to travel in Indonesia. During Ramadan before it, Lombok and Java restaurants may be screened off by day.
- Toraja funeral season (rambu solo') — Toraja families hold their great funeral feasts mostly from July to September, after the harvest, sometimes years after a death: days of ceremonies in a specially built village of bamboo pavilions, buffalo and pig sacrifices, and the procession to a cliff tomb. Dates are set by each family, so a guide in Rantepao finds out which are on; visitors are welcome with a small gift.
