Red-Rock Valley of Castles in the Steppe
A canyon cut by the Charyn river through the steppe 200 km east of Almaty, about three hours by road. The Valley of Castles is a 2-3 km walk between red sandstone walls down to the river, where the Charyn Eco Park has cabins and yurts; the Black Canyon and Moon Canyon are short drives on. Most people see it on the way to the Kolsai lakes, on a one- or two-day tour or with a driver; there is little shade, so walk early or late in summer.
