🏞️ Charyn & the Kolsai Lakes
East of Almaty towards the Chinese and Kyrgyz borders: the red Valley of Castles in Charyn Canyon, then the spruce valleys of the Kolsai lakes and Kaindy's sunken forest above the village of Saty. A two-day trip from Almaty; snow closes the mountain roads at times from November to April.
🐎 Altyn-Emel
The desert national park on the Ili river north-east of Almaty: the humming Singing Dune, the painted Aktau mountains, and herds of kulans and gazelles.
🕌 Shymkent & Turkistan
The warm Silk Road south: Shymkent's bazaars and Uzbek-style food, and Turkistan with the turquoise-domed Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Kazakhstan's holiest shrine and a UNESCO site. Spring and autumn are the seasons; summer is very hot.
🏙️ Astana & Burabay
The capital on the northern steppe, a showcase of modern towers, mosques and museums, and the pine-forest lakes of Burabay three hours north. Bitterly cold from December to February; best from May to September.
🏜️ Mangystau & the Caspian
The far west, three hours' flight from Almaty: Aktau on the Caspian, and the desert beyond it, with Sherkala's lone mesa, the stone balls of Torysh and the white cliffs of Bozzhyra under the Ustyurt plateau, reached by 4x4.
