Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), at the head of the Langtang valley, is the base of the shortest high-mountain trek from Kathmandu: 7-9 hours by bus or jeep to Syabrubesi, then about three days' walk up past Lama Hotel and the rebuilt Langtang village (destroyed by the 2015 earthquake), a day for Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri, and two days down. The days here include the walk; the road leg ends at Syabrubesi. Yak-cheese factory, glaciers and Tamang villages; fewer trekkers than Everest or Annapurna.

Worth knowing

Monsoon on the Trails: Leeches, Landslides, Cloud

June to September is the monsoon. Trails are wet and slippery, leeches are everywhere below about 3,000 m (carry salt and leech socks), landslides block roads and paths, and cloud hides the mountains most days. Flights to Lukla are cancelled often. Treks are possible but this is the worst time for views; October–November and March–May are the seasons.

Peak Trekking Season

October–November (clearest skies) and March–May (warmer, rhododendrons in bloom, some haze) are the trekking seasons. Trails and teahouses are at their busiest: book flights and lodges in advance, walk early, and expect higher prices for rooms with attached bathrooms.

Langtang in Winter

December to February brings snow above Langtang village and freezing nights at Kyanjin Gompa; some lodges close and Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri can be snowbound. The valley is quiet and clear on good days.
