🛕 Kathmandu Valley
The capital and the two old royal cities beside it, Patan and Bhaktapur, with seven UNESCO monument zones between them: Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and the three Durbar Squares. Nagarkot on the valley's rim has the Himalayan sunrise. Every flight from India lands here.

🍵 East: Janakpur & Ilam
Janakpur, the Mithila city of Sita and the Janaki Mandir, a short train ride from Bihar, and the tea gardens of Ilam in the far-eastern hills, three hours from the Kakarbhitta border near Siliguri.
🏔️ Everest (Khumbu)
The Sherpa country below Everest, with no roads: fly to Lukla's airstrip and walk two days to Namche Bazaar, the acclimatisation stop on the way to Tengboche and Everest Base Camp. Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu municipality permits are needed; Lukla flights are often held up by weather.
⛰️ Langtang
The high valley nearest Kathmandu: a day by road to Syabrubesi, then three days' walk up to Kyanjin Gompa under the Langtang Lirung glaciers, with Tamang villages on the way. Quieter than Everest and Annapurna; a Langtang National Park permit is needed.
🏞️ Pokhara & the Middle Hills
Pokhara on Phewa Lake under the Annapurnas, Sarangkot's paragliding ridge above it, and Bandipur, a car-free Newar hill town halfway from Kathmandu. Pokhara is the base for every Annapurna trek and the easiest mountain views in Nepal.
🥾 Annapurna & Mustang
The trekking country north of Pokhara, inside the Annapurna Conservation Area: the Poon Hill sunrise above Ghorepani, the Gurung village of Ghandruk, Manang below the Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit, and Jomsom in the Kali Gandaki valley, the road and air gateway to Muktinath and to restricted Upper Mustang. An ACAP permit is needed.

🦏 Terai: Chitwan & Lumbini
The flat, hot lowlands along the Indian border: rhinos, tigers and gharials in Chitwan National Park, and Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, 25 km from the Sunauli crossing. Best from October to March; the monsoon floods the rivers.
🐅 Far West: Bardia & Rara
Nepal's least-visited corner: Bardia National Park, the best chance of a wild tiger in Nepal, and Rara, the country's largest lake, high in the Karnali hills and reached by small plane. Nepalgunj's airport serves both.
