The Sanctuary Stairway and the Cradle of Portugal
Two historic towns of the Minho, 25 km apart and each about an hour from Porto by urban train. Braga, Portugal's religious capital, has the country's oldest cathedral and the hilltop sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte (UNESCO), climbed by a zig-zag baroque stairway or by a funicular worked by water since 1882; its Holy Week processions are the country's most famous. Guimarães, "where Portugal was born", has the castle of the first king, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and a medieval centre on the UNESCO list, with a cable car up Penha. Buses link the two in about 30 minutes.

Worth knowing
Wildfire Season
From July to September hot, dry winds spread wildfires in the forests of the centre and north, the Algarve hills (Monchique) and Madeira, as in 2017, 2024 and 2025. Follow the civil-protection text alerts, obey road and trail closures, never light a fire or barbecue outdoors, and check before a hike. Travel insurance should cover cancellations.
- Holy Week in Braga — Portugal's most solemn Easter: night processions through Braga's lit streets, the barefoot farricocos with their rattles and torches on Maundy Thursday, and the churches decorated for the week. Rooms in Braga fill; Guimarães and Porto are under an hour away.
