Douro Valley

Terraced Vineyards Along the River of Port Wine

2 daysIdeal stay₹9,590From / night₹2,340Food / day₹2,660Entry

The terraced vineyards of the world's oldest demarcated wine region (1756), a UNESCO landscape where port and Douro wines are made, along a river winding east from Porto. Pinhão and Peso da Régua are the bases: wine estates (quintas) with tastings and lunch, river boats, the Douro Museum in Régua, and viewpoints such as Casal de Loivos and São Leonardo de Galafura. The Douro line from Porto's São Bento station runs beside the river for its last hour, one of Europe's loveliest train rides. The September harvest (vindima) is the busiest time, and July and August are very hot in the valley. A hire car, a driver or a tour is the way between quintas.

When to go

Best time: May – October

Worth knowing

Inland Heat: 40 °C and More

July and August on the Alentejo plain and in the deep Douro valley often pass 40 °C, far hotter than the coast. Sightsee early, rest in the afternoon, carry water, and book rooms with air-conditioning (and a pool at a quinta). June and September are warm but easier.

Worth knowing

Wildfire Season

From July to September hot, dry winds spread wildfires in the forests of the centre and north, the Algarve hills (Monchique) and Madeira, as in 2017, 2024 and 2025. Follow the civil-protection text alerts, obey road and trail closures, never light a fire or barbecue outdoors, and check before a hike. Travel insurance should cover cancellations.

  • The grape harvest (vindima) in the Douro — From early September into October the quintas pick their grapes, and some still tread them by foot in stone lagares at night; several offer harvest days for visitors. The valley's most beautiful and busiest weeks: book quinta stays well ahead.
