Fairy-Tale Palaces in the Hills Above the Atlantic
A UNESCO cultural landscape of palaces and gardens in forested hills, 40 minutes by suburban train from Lisbon's Rossio station: the red-and-yellow Pena Palace on its crag, the walls of the Moorish Castle, Quinta da Regaleira with its spiral initiation well, the Sintra National Palace in the old town, and the gardens of Monserrate. Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe's westernmost point, and the wild Atlantic beaches are a short bus ride on, and buses continue to Cascais. Pena and the other Parques de Sintra sites sell timed tickets: book ahead and come early, as day-trip crowds fill the narrow hill roads by mid-morning (the 434 bus loops round the sights; don't drive). Most people visit on a day trip from Lisbon; a night lets you reach Pena at opening.

When to go
Best time: April – June, September – October
Worth knowing
Wildfire Season
From July to September hot, dry winds spread wildfires in the forests of the centre and north, the Algarve hills (Monchique) and Madeira, as in 2017, 2024 and 2025. Follow the civil-protection text alerts, obey road and trail closures, never light a fire or barbecue outdoors, and check before a hike. Travel insurance should cover cancellations.

Sintra's Crowds: Timed Tickets and Queues
From May to September day-trippers fill Sintra from mid-morning: the hill road to Pena jams, the 434 bus has long queues, and Pena's palace runs on timed entry slots. Book Pena online for the first slot, take an early train from Rossio, and leave the car in Lisbon.
