Koh Mook (Koh Muk)
The Emerald Cave and the Quiet Trang Islands
The most lived-in of the Trang islands, between Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe: a fishing village of Muslim and sea-gypsy families on the east side and a few resorts on Hat Farang (Charlie Beach) to the west. Its sight is the Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot), an 80-metre swim through a dark sea tunnel into a hidden beach ringed by cliffs, best at low tide before the day boats come; Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Cheuk are short long-tail hops. Boats from Kuan Tung Ku pier near Trang run all year; the island-hopping speedboats from Lanta and Lipe only from November to April. Bring cash.

When to go
Best time: November – April
Worth knowing
Koh Mook Low Season: No Island-Hopping Boats
The speedboats from Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe stop from May to October; only the Trang ferry from Kuan Tung Ku runs, many resorts close, and Emerald Cave trips are cancelled when the swell is up. Come and go through Trang, and keep a spare day before your flight.
- Buddhist holy days (Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asahna Bucha) · Visakha Bucha 31 May; Asahna Bucha and Buddhist Lent 29–30 Jul — Candle-lit processions round the temples at dusk, worth seeing in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya. Alcohol may not be sold anywhere, bars included, for 24-48 hours (hotels and airport duty free excepted); the Full Moon Party moves a night.
- Christmas and New Year peak — The most expensive fortnight of the year on the islands: resorts set 5-7 night minimums and compulsory gala-dinner charges on 24 and 31 December, and Phi Phi, Samui and Phuket ferries and flights fill a month ahead. Indian school holidays add to it. Book by October.
