The weather in December

What the season does to Tioman Island this month.

Worth knowing

Monsoon Seas: Fewer, Rougher Ferries

Tioman stays open through the north-east monsoon, but ferries from Mersing run less often, change times at short notice and are cancelled in high seas; diving visibility is poor and some resorts close. Keep a spare day before your flight.

What’s on in December

Timing a trip around these changes what you pay and what you can book.

  • Year-end school holidays

Malaysian and Singaporean families travel in December: Cameron Highlands' road jams at weekends, Langkawi and Penang resorts are at their dearest round Christmas and New Year, and Melaka is packed with Singaporean weekenders. Book rooms and buses early.
