Geysers, Mud Pools and Māori Culture

2 daysIdeal stay₹6,600From / night₹2,480Food / day₹4,130Entry

A town on a volcanic lake, smelling faintly of sulphur, where the Pōhutu geyser erupts at Te Puia and mud boils in the thermal parks of Wai-O-Tapu and Whakarewarewa. It is the best place in the country to see Māori culture: a hāngī feast and kapa haka performance at a village in the evening. Redwood forest canopy walks, luge and mountain biking fill the days; Hobbiton at Matamata is about an hour away.

  • Matariki (Māori New Year) — The rising of the Matariki (Pleiades) star cluster, a public holiday since 2022: dawn ceremonies, light shows, kai (food) festivals and star-viewing events across the country, biggest in Auckland and Wellington. A long weekend: domestic flights and ski towns are busier.
