🌉 Auckland, Northland & Coromandel
The arrival city for most flights from India and the warm, subtropical north: Auckland's harbours and volcanoes (with Waiheke Island's vineyards a ferry ride away), the Treaty Grounds and islands of the Bay of Islands, and the Coromandel's Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. December to March is beach weather.
🌋 Central North Island
The volcanic heart of the North Island: geysers, mud pools and Māori culture in Rotorua (with Hobbiton an hour away), the glowworm caves of Waitomo, and Lake Taupō with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing over the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.
🚡 Hawke's Bay & Wellington
Napier's Art Deco streets and the Hawke's Bay wineries, and Wellington, the compact harbour capital with Te Papa, the cable car and the ferries across Cook Strait to the South Island.
⛴️ Marlborough & Nelson
Where the ferry from Wellington lands: the bays and bush of the Marlborough Sounds around Picton, Blenheim's Sauvignon Blanc vineyards, and the golden beaches and Coast Track of Abel Tasman National Park beyond Nelson, the sunniest corner of the country.
🧊 West Coast
A long, wet, wild strip between the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea: the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers falling into rainforest, Lake Matheson's reflections, and the TranzAlpine train's end at Greymouth. Bring a rain jacket and sandfly repellent; keep a spare day for helicopter flights.
🏔️ Queenstown, Fiordland & Otago
Lakes and mountains in the south: Queenstown's adventure sports and ski fields, quieter Wānaka, Te Anau and the fiords of Milford and Doubtful Sounds, and Dunedin's albatrosses and penguins. Busiest December to March and in the ski season, June to September.

🌌 Mackenzie Country & Aoraki
The high tussock basin between Christchurch and Queenstown: turquoise Lakes Takapō and Pukaki, a Dark Sky Reserve over Tekapo, and Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak, with the Hooker Valley Track to its iceberg lake. Lupins bloom from mid-November to December.
🐋 Christchurch & Canterbury Coast
Christchurch, the South Island's main city and airport, rebuilt after its earthquakes, with Akaroa on Banks Peninsula close by; and Kaikōura up the coast, where sperm whales feed off the shore all year. The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific trains start here.
