Great Lake Taupō and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

2 daysIdeal stay₹7,150From / night₹2,480Food / dayFreeEntry

Taupō sits on New Zealand's largest lake, the crater of a supervolcano, with the Huka Falls thundering on the Waikato River just north of town. It is the usual base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19.4 km, 6-8 hours) past the steaming Red Crater and Emerald Lakes of Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage site about 1.5 hours south; shuttles run from Taupō and from National Park village. The crossing is an alpine walk: it is called off in bad weather, and in winter it needs ice gear or a guide.

When to go

Best time: December – March (the crossing); all year for the lake

Heads up

Desert Road Snow Closures

The Desert Road (SH1) south of Taupō past Mt Ruapehu closes for snow a few times each winter; the detour adds an hour or more.

Plan around this

Tongariro Crossing in Winter Conditions

⚠️ From late autumn to spring the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is covered in snow and ice: it becomes an alpine climb needing crampons, an ice axe and the skills to use them. Go only with a guided winter trip. The weather on the tops changes within an hour; shuttles cancel if it is bad.

Tongariro Crossing: Book a Shuttle, Watch the Weather

The crossing is 19.4 km and 6-8 hours, much of it exposed above 1,500 m. Parking at the Mangatepopo start is limited to 4 hours, so book a shuttle (from Taupō or National Park village) for a one-way walk, check the mountain forecast the evening before, carry warm layers and a rain jacket even in summer, and turn back if the cloud comes in.
