Texas's capital and its liveliest small city: live music on Sixth Street and South Congress, the pink-granite State Capitol, swimming in spring-fed Barton Springs Pool, kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, and, from March to October, a million and a half bats streaming out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk. SXSW fills the city every March. Radha Madhav Dham, a large Hindu temple and ashram, is just south of the city; Austin is easy for vegetarians away from the barbecue joints. Hot summers.
