Savannah

Squares, Spanish Moss and River Street

2 daysIdeal stay₹14,270From / night₹4,280Food / dayFreeEntry

Georgia's first city, laid out in 1733 around a grid of shady squares, 22 of which survive: a historic district of live oaks hung with Spanish moss, fountains, church spires and grand 19th-century houses, best seen on foot or from a trolley. Forsyth Park's fountain, River Street's cobbled cotton warehouses, Bonaventure Cemetery, the Owens-Thomas House and its slave quarters, and Wormsloe's long avenue of oaks are the classic sights, and Tybee Island's beach and lighthouse are half an hour east. Its St. Patrick's Day parade in March is one of the country's biggest. Spring is best; summers are hot and humid, and the hurricane season runs from June to November. Two hours from Charleston.

Worth knowing

Peak Hurricane Season

⚠️ Mid-August to mid-October is the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. A storm can close airports, cancel flights and, in the Keys and on the Gulf coast, bring evacuation orders. Buy refundable bookings and travel insurance that covers hurricanes, follow the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) in the days before, and leave when officials say so.

Heads up

Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November; storms are less likely at its ends than in August to October, but afternoon thunderstorms are near daily in summer. Watch the National Hurricane Center's outlook before you travel.

  • St. Patrick's Day, Savannah — One of the country's biggest St. Patrick's Day parades and street parties, through the historic district around 17 March; the fountains are dyed green and hotels need booking months ahead.
