Great Smoky Mountains (Gatlinburg)

Misty Ridges, Cades Cove and the Most-Visited National Park

3 daysIdeal stay₹11,410From / night₹3,800Food / day₹480Entry

The most visited national park in the country, on the Tennessee-North Carolina line: forested ridges in a blue haze, black bears, deer and wild turkeys in Cades Cove's open valley (an 18 km one-way loop road, closed to cars on Wednesdays from May to September), waterfalls such as Grotto and Abrams Falls, Newfound Gap on the Appalachian Trail, and the tower on Kuwohi, formerly Clingmans Dome, whose road is open from April to November. Entry is free, but every car parked for more than 15 minutes needs a parking tag (US$5 a day, $15 a week; national-park passes don't cover it). Gatlinburg, at the park gate, and Pigeon Forge next to it, with Dollywood, are busy resort towns of cabins, pancake houses and attractions. Mid-October to early November brings the autumn colours and the heaviest traffic. An hour from Knoxville's airport, about four hours from Nashville.

  • Synchronous fireflies, Great Smoky Mountains — For about two weeks between late May and mid-June, thousands of fireflies near Elkmont flash in unison after dark. Viewing is by a parking-pass lottery on recreation.gov held in spring.
