Hungary / The Danube Bend / EsztergomEsztergom
Hungary's Largest Church on the Slovak Border
The first royal seat of Hungary, where St Stephen was crowned in 1000, and still the seat of its Catholic primate. The neoclassical Basilica on Castle Hill is the largest church in the country, with a crypt, a treasury and a dome walk (several hundred steps) over the Danube; the Castle Museum beside it keeps the medieval palace chapel. The Mária Valéria Bridge crosses the river to Štúrovo in Slovakia, also in Schengen, so you can walk over and back. About 1 h 10 by train from Budapest-Nyugati, or by bus; in summer boats and hydrofoils come up the Danube.
