🏛️ Budapest
The capital on both banks of the Danube: the Castle District and Gellért Hill in Buda, the Parliament, the Basilica and the old Jewish Quarter in Pest, thermal baths on the city's springs, and the river boats between them. Flights from India land here, with one stop, and every train line in the country starts here.
🏞️ The Danube Bend
North of Budapest the Danube turns south between wooded hills: the baroque artists' town of Szentendre, the hilltop citadel and royal palace of Visegrád, and Esztergom's great basilica on the Slovak border. Each is an hour or so from Budapest by suburban train, train or bus, and by boat in summer.
🐎 Eger & the Great Plain
North-east Hungary: Eger, its castle, minaret and wine cellars below the Bükk hills, and beyond it the Hortobágy, the open puszta of the Great Plain with its horsemen, grey cattle and autumn cranes, near the city of Debrecen.
🌊 Lake Balaton
Central Europe's largest lake and Hungary's summer seaside: the Tihany peninsula and the spa town of Balatonfüred on the north shore, and at the western end the warm thermal lake of Hévíz and the Festetics Palace at Keszthely. Beaches and boats from about May to September; Hévíz is good all year.
🕌 Pécs & Southern Transdanubia
The sunny south, near the Croatian border: Pécs, with its Roman and Early Christian tombs, a mosque turned church and the Zsolnay porcelain quarter, and Mohács on the Danube, home of the Busójárás carnival.
