Baroque Artists' Town on the Danube

1 dayIdeal stay₹5,940From / night₹2,670Food / day₹1,340Entry

A small baroque town on the Danube 20 km north of Budapest, settled by Serbian refugees in the 17th and 18th centuries: cobbled lanes climb from the riverside to a painted main square and several Serbian Orthodox churches, and the town has long been an artists' colony, with the Margit Kovács ceramics collection and many small galleries. Just outside, the Hungarian Open-Air Museum (Skanzen) has whole village houses, churches and workshops from every region, open roughly April to October. The H5 suburban railway (HÉV) from Batthyány tér takes about 40 minutes, and summer boats come up the river from Budapest. Busy with day-trippers at weekends; quiet in the evening.

  • Painted baroque Main Square
  • Serbian Orthodox Belgrade Cathedral and its icons
  • Margit Kovács ceramics

Mahart's excursion boats and hydrofoils from Budapest run about May to September only (some lines in July and August only, others mostly at weekends). Out of season go by train, the HÉV or Volánbusz coaches, which run all year.

Skanzen's Winter Season

The Hungarian Open-Air Museum (Skanzen) outside Szentendre has its main season from about April to early November; in winter it opens on few days, if at all. Check its site before planning a day around it.
