The Strip, Shows and the Gateway to the Canyons
The Strip's themed casino-resorts, the free Bellagio fountains, Fremont Street's light canopy and big-name shows, and the airport most canyon road trips start from: Hoover Dam is 50 km away, Zion two and three-quarter hours, the Grand Canyon's South Rim four and a half. Room rates swing with weekends and conventions, and almost every resort adds a nightly resort fee (included in the prices here). Summer days pass 40 °C. Plenty of Indian restaurants and buffets with vegetarian dishes.

When to go
Best time: October – April
Worth knowing
Extreme Desert Heat
⚠️ Summer days pass 40 °C in Las Vegas and the desert below the rims (the Grand Canyon's floor reaches 45 °C). Hike only at dawn, carry at least 4 litres of water a person, never leave anyone in a parked car, and don't try the canyon trails to the river in the heat: rangers rescue hikers every summer.
- CES, Las Vegas — The giant consumer-electronics show in early January brings well over 100,000 visitors: Strip hotels charge several times their usual rates that week. Other big conventions do the same through the year.
