Delicate Arch, Mesa Arch and the Colorado River
A red-rock town on the Colorado River in eastern Utah, between two national parks. Arches, 8 km north, has more than 2,000 natural stone arches: Delicate Arch at sunset (a 5 km round trip climbing over bare slickrock), the Windows and Double Arch, and Landscape Arch in Devils Garden. Canyonlands' Island in the Sky, under an hour away, looks from Mesa Arch and Grand View Point into canyons cut by the Green and Colorado rivers, with Dead Horse Point State Park's overlook beside it. Arches needs no timed-entry reservation in 2026 (the Fiery Furnace hikes still do), and neither park carries the nonresident surcharge; come early, as the entrance queue and the Delicate Arch car park fill on busy mornings. Jeep tours, river floats and mountain biking fill the rest. About 5.5 hours from Denver (or a short United Express flight to Canyonlands airport), 7 from Las Vegas and 2.5 from Monument Valley; summer days reach 38 °C.

When to go
Best time: March – May, September – October
Worth knowing
Extreme Desert Heat
⚠️ Summer days pass 40 °C in Las Vegas and the desert below the rims (the Grand Canyon's floor reaches 45 °C). Hike only at dawn, carry at least 4 litres of water a person, never leave anyone in a parked car, and don't try the canyon trails to the river in the heat: rangers rescue hikers every summer.
Worth knowing
Monsoon Storms and Flash Floods
⚠️ July to September brings afternoon thunderstorms to Moab: flash floods race down dry washes and canyons, dirt roads such as the Shafer Trail can wash out, and lightning strikes the open slickrock. Check the forecast at the visitor centre, stay out of narrow canyons when storms build, and be off exposed trails by early afternoon.
Heads up
Arches Without Timed Entry
Arches needs no timed-entry reservation in 2026, so on spring and autumn mornings the entrance queue backs up towards the highway and the Delicate Arch and Devils Garden car parks fill. Enter before about 8 am or after mid-afternoon; the Fiery Furnace hikes still need a booking on recreation.gov.
