🐹 Perth & Western Australia
Perth's beaches and Kings Park, the quokkas of Rottnest Island, and the wineries, caves and surf of Margaret River. Five hours' flying from Sydney, and the closest Australian city to India.
🍷 Adelaide & South Australia
Adelaide's markets, festivals and parklands, the Barossa and McLaren Vale wine valleys, and Kangaroo Island's sea lions and wildlife, 45 minutes by ferry. The Ghan and the Indian Pacific both call at Adelaide.
🏔️ Tasmania
The island state across Bass Strait: Hobart's harbour, Salamanca Market and MONA, the Port Arthur convict site, and the alpine lakes and wombats of Cradle Mountain. Reached by air or on the overnight Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Geelong; there are no passenger trains, so most visitors hire a car.
☕ Melbourne & Victoria
Melbourne's laneways, food and sport, the little penguins of Phillip Island, the Great Ocean Road west to the Twelve Apostles, and the sandstone ranges and rock art of the Grampians. Air India flies to Melbourne non-stop from Delhi; the Spirit of Tasmania sails from Geelong.

🐠 Tropical North Queensland & the Reef
The Great Barrier Reef from Cairns and Port Douglas, the Daintree rainforest, and the 74 Whitsunday Islands with Whitehaven Beach. Best from May to October; the wet season (December to March) brings heat, heavy rain and cyclones, and box jellyfish are in the sea from November to May.
🪨 Northern Territory: the Red Centre & the Top End
Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the desert at the heart of the continent, and in the tropical Top End, Darwin's markets and Kakadu's wetlands and rock art. The two are 1,500 km apart and joined by air. Visit from April or May to September: the Centre is scorching in summer, and the Top End's wet season closes Kakadu's roads.
